Japanese Research Trend and Translation Difficulties of Zora Neale Hurston

     This presentation will discuss 1) Research Trend of Hurston in Japan, showing some slides, and 2) Translation Difficulties of Hurston’s Works. One of the components of Part 1 will be a historical perspective. We will look back on Hurston studies from the dawn of the research history to recent years in Japan. The other component of Part 1 will treat a current research trend of Hurston in Japan. Part 2 demonstrates difficulties inherent in translation into Japanese by examples drawn from Dust Tracks on a Road and Their Eyes Were Watching God.
